I love the verses Romans 8:38-39. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
I think that this verse, when it says “nor anything else in all creation”, includes myself. I cannot even separate myself from the love of my Savior after I have already been saved. Of course, I wouldn’t want to and am glad that nothing can separate me from Jesus and His perfect Love, but what I also believe is that you cannot lose your salvation. Once you have accepted Christ and believed in Him as the only Way to the Father, you are saved forever. Period.
Some people believe you can lose your salvation, that you risk losing it every moment. Where is the peace in that? God grants us the peace that passes all understanding, even calming our worries about losing salvation, because we can’t. Ever. We have become a Child of God’s forever and you can never ever ever lose that identity.
Think of the parable of the Prodigal Son. Sure, of his own free will, which God grants each one of us, the son takes his inheritance and leaves. He foolishly spends all of it, eventually eating with pigs! However, his father was anxiously waiting for him. His son would always be his son. He could never become not his son; it was his identity. Of course, his actions probably made the father sad, but all he wanted was his son home and safe and with him again. They kept the relationship of father and son, but their fellowship was severely weakened.
When the son finally grew desperate, he raced to his father’s open arms, who came out into the dusty road to meet him! He clothed him in robes and gave him rings and shoes and threw a gigantic feast for his returned son! Together again, they could begin repairing their fellowship.
This parables shows us that once we are God’s child, we are always God’s child. That relationship is permanent. However, if a believer chooses to draw away from God, he will not lose salvation, only the fellowship with his Father. But God will always be waiting to welcome him back with open arms.
Salvation is a free gift from God. Who would want to pass up a free gift? Let alone, give it back? You can’t give back a gift once you accept it. Also, salvation is not works based. That is one of the main things that makes Christianity different than all other religions. You can do absolutely nothing to earn it so therefore, once you have it, you can do absolutely nothing to lose it. To have salvation, you must accept God’s gift, believing that Jesus died to save us from sin and rose again to give us hope and peace and that He is the only Way to the Father. Since He is the bridge connecting us and God, He is never letting us go and once saved, we are saved for eternity, whereas if works brought us to God, one bad deed would destroy the whole connection.
Don’t you think God is powerful enough to save once and for all? His love is so great nothing can break it and nothing can separate you from it.
